"Yeah, maybe in a couple years I'll get promoted, and maybe several years after that I'll work my way up to Human Resources director," the man said. "But that's not my real passion. Every day, the thought of hosting pub trivia is what what gets me through my uneventful day at work." He further explained how he has been doing the trivia hosting gig for about a year now, so he has worked up to hosting a different pub's trivia Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
While the money isn't great, he says that people who pursue trivia hosting for the money are in it for the wrong reason. "Look, I won't lie to you. It doesn't bring in much from a financial standpoint. However, other trivia hosts will tell you the same thing. It's not about the money. It's about the camaraderie...the music in-between rounds... and of course, the questions," he said with a smile.
The sense of importance is another thing that interests him about it. "People come up to me several times a game," he explained. "They ask questions like: 'Could you repeat question 4?' or 'What's the answer to question 7?' or 'Did you give us our points for the bonus question?'. It really makes you feel needed."
While all those factors are important to him, he says the number one reason he enjoys it the happiness it brings to the pub-goers. "Seeing that look on the winners' faces. That's why I keep doing it," the man continued. "Watching them as 8+ people divi up the six beers that they won. I'd host for free just to see that."
The seasoned trivia host concluded by saying that his ultimate goal is to open his own pub trivia company some day.
